The Illini were hoping for a win to start off 2023 and they did one better, they got two.

The first opponent of the second half of the season for Illinois was another in-state team, McKendree University (7-10-1-0).

In the first game of the series, it appeared that the Illini were becoming victims of the bad luck that Friday the 13th is supposed to bring. They held their own for the start of the first period, but found themselves down by two goal at the end of the first 20 minutes of play. The Illini's Nolan Woodring was able to turn away all of 15 of McKendree's shots in the second period, while Pat McDonough cut the Bearcat's lead in half, making it a 2-1 game. The Illini came to life in the third period scoring four more unanswered goals, giving them their first win of the season with a score of 5-2 over McKendree University. Bogdunof, Kolb, Sammons, and Alpe credited with the Illini goals.

Saturday nights game turned into a back and forth affair as the teams traded goals. The Bearcat's were the first, and only ones, to get on the scoreboard in the first period. The Illini's Will Sammons tied the game early in the second period, but the Bearcats would regain the lead less than a minute later. The Illini would tie the game once again in the second period with a goal from Greg Entingen. McKendree would take the lead once again in the third period, but the Illin's Luke Alpe and Frank Addante would each register a goal, giving the Illini a one point lead. The Bearcats would play the last few minutes of the game with an empty net, hoping for the game tying goal, but it was not to come, giving the Illini their second win of the weekend.

The Illini improved their record to 2-11-0-1, and will next head to Athens, Ohio to face the Bobcats of Ohio University.
