Illini vs Lakers

As the season winds down for the Illini, they were hoping to find a couple of more wins on the road, but number 9 ranked Maryville was looking for a few more wins before the ACHA National Tournament in March.

The first game of the weekend series kicked off on Friday night with Maryville taking control and smothering the Illini, allowing the Orange and Blue only two shots on goal in the first period. Just under thirteen minutes into the game the Saints netted their one and only goal in the first period. The Saints out-shot the Illini 11-4 in the second period, with two of those 11 getting past Illini goaltender Ben Mazurek, making it 3-0 at the end on the period. An Illini penalty six minutes into the third period allowed Maryville to extend their lead to 4-0. Four minutes later the Illini responded with a power-play goal from Greg Etingen, making it a 4-1 game. The Saints would take back the four goal lead just minutes later, taking game one of the series. Shots on goal for the game were in favor of Maryville, 30-10. Final Score of Illini 1 - Saints 5.

Saturday night's game was mostly a repeat of the game from the night before, same two teams, same final score, and the Saints dominating the Illini. The first and second periods were all Maryville, scoring one goal in the first and four in the second, while the Illini were only able to put 7 shots on goal for those first two periods compared to the Saints 30. Frustrations showed for the Illini in the third period as they racked up 22 minutes of penalty time in a 7 minute span. The Illini avoided the shutout as Patrick McDonough lit the lamp with just under two minutes left in the game. The Saints out-shot the Illini 42-12. Final score: Illini 1 - Saints 5
